This article focuses on research into the empirical sociology of cinema carried out in Czechoslovakia through 1989. Firstly, it briefly mentions early research attempts that ended as the communist regime took over political power in the country. It then moves on to large research projects of the 1960s carried out at the Czech Film Institute and continued in a certain way in the late 1970s and in the era of so-called normalization. No large empirical research projects have been performed since 1989, with the exception of commercial research carried out in the form of marketing surveys by commercial subjects; however, these are not available to the general public.
