The paper surveys allusions to Czech culture, history and ethnicity in media discourse, particulrly in advertising. The focus is on intertextual and interdiscoursive allusions to the stereotype of Czech-ness in spots which reinforce the self-image as well as on those spots which problematize and ironize the Czech self-image. In some spots, Czech ethnic stereotypes are heard from the mouth of foreigners, in which case Czech receivers are confronted withe their self-image seen through the eyes of a different ethnic group. In another spot, the self-image is problematized through the assuming of stance towards the European Union.
