The synthesis and properties of the most popular and widely used electrically conducting polymer, polyaniline, are considered. The proposed mechanisms of the molecular synthesis and self-assembly of macromolecules occurring during the polymerization agree with the large body of experimental data. The acidity of the reaction medium is demonstrated to affect the mechanism on aniline oxidative polymerization and the formation of various types of supramolecular structures, namely nanoglobules, nanofibres, nanotubes and microspheres.
