The aim of the contribution is to present results from monitoring in three upland microcachments, which are located in the Bohemian Forest. The forest covers were formed by bark beetle population explosion and subsequent forest management. Microcatchments were selected with the emphasis on preserving approximately similar catchment properties: area (about 0.1 km2), elevation (about 1200 m), mean slope (about 0.2) and orientation (northern). The dead spruce forest was retained in the first catchment (Modrava 1) and the ecosystem was left to the natural recovery. The dead spruce forest was cleared in the second catchment (Modrava 2) and the forest clearing was partly reforested by man. Nowadays, a bent-grass cover and growing young trees are prevailing in both catchments. The third catchment (Modrava 3) should serve as a reference area and it is covered by a healthy mixed forest stand (mainly spruce and beech).
