Kniha jako první mapuje celkový vývoj české mimouniverzitní vědy od počátků v humanistických učených společnostech až po transformaci Československé akademie věd na Akademii věd ČR. Tým autorů přibližuje dějiny významných vědeckých institucí, jako byla např. Královská česká společnost nauk, Česká akademie věd a umění, Masarykova akademie práce a v poválečném období dominantní Československá akademie věd. Opomenuty nejsou ani vědecké instituce Němců v českých zemích. Součástí publikace jsou také biografické medailony osobností, které českou vědu v minulosti ovlivnily nejvýrazněji. Vedle toho obsahuje kniha i průřezové kapitoly věnované vývoji vědy v devatenáctém a dvacátém století.

The book as the first describes general development of Czech (Bohemian) science beside universities from the beginnings in scholarly associations to transformation of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences to the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Authors were aimed at the history of important scientific institutions such as the Royal Bohemian Learned Society, the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts, Masaryk Academy of Labour or the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (est. 1952) that dominated post-war period. One of chapters is also devoted to German scientific institutions in Czech lands. Biographical profiles of personalities, who influenced Czech science the most considerably in the past, are an integral part of the book, as well as cross-sectional chapters devoted to development of science in 19th and 20th centuries.
