In the paper the fracture mechanics properties of the bi-material notches are assessed by generalizing the standard crack linear elastic fracture mechanics for homogeneous media. First the singular stress field near the bi-material notch tip is investigated. Then criteria for the crack initiation and its subsequent propagation direction are formulated. To this aim it is supposed that the mechanism of crack propagation from the bi-material notch and that in the case of a crack in homogeneous materials is the same. In the contribution the stress and the energy approaches are used to assess the fracture initiation. In the case of the stress concentrations connected with material interface, more than one failure manner are possible. The damage manner caused by the existence of the bi-material notch will be evaluated and discussed.
