The unique discovery of a star shaped symbol carved into the trunk of a fossil oak tree represents a small, but important enrichment of the archaeological record. The trunk was found in the alluvial sediments of the River Labe (Elbe), central Bohemia, and it was radiocarbon dated to the 6th – 9th century AD. Symbols on trees have been used to mark trails, the ownership of land and resources and all maner of votive moments.
