The origin of pressure- and doping- driven metal-insulator transition in NiS2-xSex is studied both theoretically, using dynamical mean-field theory, and experimentally, using infrared and x-ray spectroscopies. The essential role of S-S (Se-Se) bonding is identified and discussed.
