Es wird die handschriftliche Lesart Mauri peditis verteidigt. Die Phrase Mauri peditis ist gerade aufgrund der Bestimmung von Maurus als typischer eques zu verstehen. Auf der Grundlage dieses Quasioxymoron wird für das Wort peditis der Sinn "zum Fusssoldat geworden (dismounted)" aktualisiert. Die Konjektur Marsi peditis ist unwahrscheinlich, der durchsichtige Zusammenhang von Marsus mit Mars scheidet die angenommene Korruptel aus.

The author argues for the manuscript reading Mauri peditis as against the widely accepted conjecture of Tanaquil Faber Marsi peditis. Maurus pedes is understood in the sense "dismounted" on the basis of the current notion of Maurus as eques. The clear etymological connection between Marsus and Mars speaks against the proposed conjecture ruling out the assumed corruption.
