In this study, alumina coatings were deposited using water stabilized plasma (WSP) and high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) process with two different spraying setups. Different deposition conditions resulted in different pores and cracks morphology and, for one HVOF setup, in creation of deliberately introduced vertical macro-cracks. Coated samples were subjected to four-point bending (4PB) test. Slurry abrasive response (SAR) test, corresponding to ASTM G75-01, was carried out to compare coatings wear resistance. The microstructure of the samples was observed in SEM on cross-section and free-surface before and after wear test. In addition, coating hardness was determined on the cross-sections. Relation between microstructure features and macroscopic mechanical properties of the coatings is discussed. Tests carried out for coatings with the same chemical composition but different microstructure proved strong dependency of coatings mechanical properties on voids morphology.
