The activity of human NHAoc protein and its mutated forms has been characterized upon heterologous expression in a Saccharomyces cerevisiaae mutant strain lacking its own sodium and potassium exporters. This approach identified amino-acid residues crucial for the activity of the studied protein and contributed to the eleucidation of the NHAoc protein structure
