An ideal image of a medieval ruler is presented here with reference to texts of selected „princes´ mirrors“ (Fürstenspiegel) and of the Zbraslav Chronicle of the early 14th century. The Chronicle cover lives of seven kings of Bohemia. The text clearly shows that medieval authors, and especially Peter of Zittau, assessed their reigns according to the demands of the princes´ mirrors or other treatises on governance. Their opinions come very close to the unfinished text by Thomas Aquinas De regno ad regem Cypri. Following this, chronicle-writers designate as an ideal ruler a prince governing according to the laws of God and espousing the medieval ethic doctrine of four cardinal virtues. In the eyes of their readers, the authors thus determined who was to be the rex iustus et pacificus, or the rex tyranus.
