Thepaper presents a limit analysis for normal materials based on energy minimization. The class of normal materials includes no-tension materials. Considering loads that depend affinely on the loading multiplier we examine the infimum of the potential energy over the set of all admissible displacements. The set of all loading multipliers for which the infimum energy is greater than minus infinity is an interval. Each finite indpoint is called a collapse multiplier. We examine the validity of the static and kinematic theorems of limit analysis. We show that the static theorem holds unconditionally while the kinematic theorem holds for Hencky plastic materials; for no-tension materials it generally does not hold.
