V štúdiu emocionálnej inteligencie (EI) existujú dva smery, líšia sa podľa toho, či spájajú schopnosti a osobnostné črty alebo nie. Niektorí autori rozlišujú EI ako dva konštrukty, EI ako schopnosť a EI ako črtu. Vo výskume realizovanom v súbore adolescentov (ranná adolescencia) sme sledovali emocionálnu inteligenciu oboma spôsobmi. Použili sme škály STEU (Situačná skúška emocionálneho porozumenia) na zisťovanie EI ako schopnosti a TEIQ-ASF (Dotazník črtovej emocionálnej inteligencie - krátka forma), ktorá meria EI ako črtu. Výsledky potvrdzujú špecifickosť konštruktov.

The field of emotional intelligence (EI) contains two lines, which differ depending on whether they combine (or do not combine) cognitive abilities and personality traits. According to this some authors view the EI as two separate constructs – EI as an ability and EI as a trait. The research carried out with a sample of adolescents (early adolescence) focused the attention on EI measured by both ways. To detect emotional intelligence as an ability we used the scale STEU (Situational Test of Emotional Understanding) and EI as a trait was measured by TEIQ-ASF (Trait EI Questionnaire). The results revealed the distinctiveness of both constructs.
