Každé osídlené území je protkáno sítí dopravních cest. Jejich hustota, kapacita a technické parametry odpovídají rozmístění sídel v krajině, jejich velikosti a významu v systému osídlení, hustotě obyvatel, konfiguraci terénu, klimatickým podmínkám, ekonomické vyspělosti daného území, jeho polohy v rámci kontinentu a v neposlední řadě i politickému uspořádání. V současné globální ekonomice hraje doprava stále větší význam. Podnikatelé přemísťují své firmy do zemí, kde jsou pro ně lepší ekonomické podmínky (výše daňového zatížení a levnější pracovní síla). Tím ovšem rostou požadavky na přepravu, zvyšuje je hustota dopravy, ekologická zátěž způsobená dopravou roste.

The transport networks are inherent in the present landscape. Their density and capacity depend on the population density, size structure of settlements, their economic importance, their mutual relationships and last but not least on the politic and administrative organization of the territory. Transport networks and traffic loads have been changing during the time. With the growth of globalization of world economy, the demands on transportation are increasing. Faster, high capacity transport communications are needed which allow fast transport connections both for passengers and for goods. Therefore the new high capacity communications are under construction. From the ecologic point of view, it however leads to fragmentation of the landscape and ecologic disruption.
