We monitored changes in the astroglia morphology throughout the age-dependent progression of AD, in the hippocampus of a triple transgenic mouse model of AD (3xTg-AD) that mimics the temporal progression of the human disease. We found astrocytic atrophy in both the dentate gyrus and hippocampal CA1 field from middle age (12 months onwards). However, astroglial atrophy appears as a generalised process, astrocytes that surround neuritic plaques are clearly hypertrophic which suggest differential effects of AD on astroglial populations depending on their association with plaques which account for the progressive disruption of connectivity in neural networks and neurotransmitters imbalance which underlie cognitive impairments observed in AD.
