Kniha představuje Vánoce jako fenomén evropské kultury. Lidová kultura Vánoc čerpá ze společného evropského základu, který tvoří rolnictví, antické tradice a křesťanství. Z hledisek etnologie hodnotí reflexe vánočního kultu křesťnského Západu a Východu a vklad tradic lidové kultury vánočním oslavám.

The book presents Christmas as a phenomenon of European culture. The folk culture of Christmas draws on a common Europan background shaped by farming, antique traditions, and Christianity. From a standpoint of ethnology it evaluates the reflection of the cult of Christmas in the Christian West and East, and the contribution of the tradition of folk culture to the Christmas celebrations.
