Using patch-clamp technique and immunohistochemical analysis, we investigated the changes in the expression of K+ channels in the rat hippocampal astrocytes and NG2-glia following global cerebral ischemia. We showed that the membrane properties of astrocytes after ischemia undergo complex alterations profoundly influencing the maintenance of K+ homeostasis in the damaged tissue, while NG2 glia display membrane currents typical of proliferating cells.
