The extent to which the stress induced martensitic transformation displays the hysteretic nature predetermines the use of the superelasticity for passive damping purposes. As the occurrence of the superelastic behaviour depends on the external conditions the SMAs are subjected to, the efficiency of the superelastic damping is presumably influenced by the operating conditions of SMA dampers. Therefore, we identified experimentally the dependence of the superelastic damping of a commercially available thin NiTi wire on several operating parameters such as vibration amplitude, prestrain, temperature of surroundings, and frequency. Furthermore, a phenomenological SMA model coupled with the heat equation was used to explain the frequency dependence of the superelastic damping. The conducted analysis showed clearly that the superelastic damping can be used efficiently only while setting the operating conditions within a limited range.
