Studie mapuje historii zkoumání západních literatur v rámci někdejšího Ústavu pro českou a světovou literaturu ČSAV od jeho vzniku do roku 1993, kdy byl přeměněn do současné podoby na Ústav pro českou literaturu AV ČR. Nejprve si studie všímá historického vývoje institucionálního zázemí oddělení světových literatur (dříve ne-slovanských literatur) i výzkumných autorských děl jednotlivých pracovníků oddělení. V druhé části studie je zvláštní pozornost věnována encyklopedickému dílu Slovníku světových literárních děl (ed. V. Macura), jež také vzniklo v první půli 80. let na půdě ÚČSL ČSAV. Studie hodnotí stav výzkumu západních literatur s přihlédnutím ke kontextu evropské komparatistiky a literární vědy i ke specifickému dobovému kontextu domácímu, jenž mnohdy překvapivým způsobem určoval akcenty i bílá místa bádání.

The paper aims to provide a brief and concise overview of the research of Western literatures as it was done at the Institute of Czech and World Literatures of Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences throughout the seventies, eighties and early nineties of the 20th century, when it was transformed to the present date Institute of Czech Literature in 1993. First, the historical development and institutional frameworks of the department of Western (later also referred to as non-Slavonic) literatures is outlined. The second part of the paper then focuses on significant works of individual researchers as well as collective projects. The paper debates both achievements and some shortcomings of the research of Western literatures at the ICL and highlights the specificity of literary research in Eastern Europe under the then political and cultural circumstances. The image of European literary canon as modeled by several major works of literary history and lexicography produced at the Institute is also debated.
