The longitudinal magneto-optical Kerr effect combined with the magneto-optical microscopy is used to investigate the surface magnetic anisotropy and the domain behavior in as-quenched and strain-annealed FeNbB ribbons. A magnetically harder layer (about 1.3 micron thick), consisting of crystallites embedded in an amorphous matrix has been found on the ribbon air side. The underneath bulk phase is amorphous and magnetically soft. Wide in-plane domains with 180 derees walls and narrow fingerprint domains, corresponding to amorphous phase are gradually overlapped by strip domains with magnetization directions almost perpendicular to the ribbon axis originating from the surface hard magnetic layer.
