This is the second in a series of papers describing the archeological examination of the contents of a cupola that was rapidly quenched with water and nitrogen while in steady state operation. The first paper dealt with a detailed description of the experimental studies, including the quenching of the cupola. This paper deals with the behavior of iron and steel from the charge door to the top of the slag layer. The data comprise extensive chemical analyses of the metals prior to melting as well as the analysis of liquid metal drops. Mechanistic conclusions are drawn which enhance the understanding of the basic physical and chemical processes that take place in the cupola furnace as well as provide information for improved algorithms for cupola simulation models.
