Studie vychází ze srovnání nedávno vydaného románu Miloše Urbana Lord Mord (2008) s dílem Jakuba Arbese Svatý Xaverius (Saint Xaverius, 1873) náležejícího k výpravné tradici 19. století. Poukazuje na disproporční pozornost, již kritika věnuje vizuálním vlastnostem textu a jež plyne z literárněhistorických schematismů a zaměňování pojmů popisnost a vizualita. Studie proto předkládá klasifikaci popisnosti a vizuality a zabývá se problémem odlišení funkce obrazu jako složky příběhu a ekfráze jako textové složky narativního diskurzu.
Taking the comparation of a recent novel by Miloš Urban Lord Mord (2008) and the work of Jakub Arbes Svatý Xaverius (Saint Xaverius, 1873) stemming from the narrative tradition of the 19th century as a nodal point, the essay shows disproportional attention paid by the critics to the visual qualities of the text, which results from schemes of literary history and also from confusing the notions of descriptivity and visuality. Thus, the study submits a classification of descriptiveness and visuality while distinguishing between the employment of a picture as an entity of the story and ekphrasis as a textual component of the narrative discourse in particular.
