Gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) were prepared for a novel for proton exchange membrane type fuel cells operating at elevated temperatures. A catalyst ink containing carbon-supported platinum catalyst and polybenzimidazole was deposited on the surface of electrodes. New electrodes performed well in a laboratory-scale single fuel cell employing membranes doped with H3PO4 but poorly with membranes based on ionic liquids.
