Many recent literature findings illustrate the fact that a variety of compounds active in cancer cells act via mitochondria. These compounds, termed mitocans, destabilise mitochondria and cause apoptosis, which is, at least in some cases, selective for cancer cells. Thus, novel drugs offer substantial promise as potent and effective clinical treatments with minimal side-effects. The chapter on mitochondria as targets for cancer therapy is included in the book presenting thorough analyses of mitochondrial dysfunction as one of the hallmarks of cancer and discussing the clinical implications of cancer mitochondrial defects
