The role of oxidative damage in the mechanisms of action of selected individual c-PAHs, an artificial mixture of c-PAHs and extractable organic matter (EOM) from urban air particulate matter was investigated using two cell lines (HepG2 and HEL). The response of the cell lines to the tested compounds differed substantially. The study demonstrated the potency of EOM to induce oxidative damage to DNA, lipids and proteins in HepG2 cells, but not in HEL cels. The analysis also showed that c-PAHs had less ability to cause oxidative damage.
