Most of carcinomas of the urinary tract express tumor-associated antigen CAIX in cell membranes near the endoluminal surface of urinary tract. Soluble form of the antigen - sCAIX is shed into the urine, where it could serve as a diagnostic and prognostic tumor marker. Serum of the patients, however, contained only normal levels of s-CAIX.
