Essential hypertension is a complex trait resulting from the interaction of multiple genetic and environmental factors. Not only genetic but also epigenetic inheritance plays a significant role. Esenciální hypertenze je komplexní porucha vznikající na bázi interakce genetických faktorů a faktorů prostředí. Nejenom genetická ale i epigenetická dědičnost hrají významnou úlohu. Navzdory značnému výzkumnému úsilí je dosud obtížně identifikovat všechny genetické faktory vedoucí k esenciální hypertenzi. Ačkoliv kardiovaskulární choroby se obvykle stávají zdravotním problémem až v dospělosti, jejich kořeny mohou být vystopovány do časných stádií vývoje jedince
