In this paper, we have measured the influence of humidity on tribological behaviour and impact resistance of carbon-based hard composite coatings deposited by PACVD with an interface magnetron sputtered metallic layer. It is well known, that humidity can significantly influence the tribological behaviour of carbon-based coatings, but unexpectedly, also influence of humidity on impact resistance of this type of film. By increasing the relative humidity from 2.5% to 95%, the value of dynamic impact resistance increases more than four times. Simultaneously the wear rate 0 the coated part increases by more than four orders of magnitude. By optimising components coated by carbon-based coatings exposed to dynamical load, we must take into account not only temperature, roughness of surfaces, and contact pressure but also the influence of the relative humidity at which the component runs.
