Kniha analyzuje současný vývoj vnitřních částí nejvýznamnějších moravských měst Brna a Ostravy. Vychází z postavení obou měst v národních systémech osídlení. Pracuje s teoretickým uchopením současných urbanizačních procesů v postsocialistických městech a argumentuje, že města středovýchodní Evropy jsou z globálního pohledu spíše postindustriální. Analýza vnitřních měst konstatuje jejich dělení na lepší a horší adresy s dynamičtějším vývojem v posledně jmenované kategorii. Monografie si všímá vlivu sociálně preferovaných vrstev (studentů) a sociálně vyloučených (Romů a bezdomovců). Publikace shrnuje selektivní změny ve vnitřních městech (změnu obytné funkce na kanceláře, projevy gentrifikace, reurbanizace, ghettoizace), předjímá možné vývojové trendy a diskutuje budoucí postavení obou měst v evropském sídelním systému, kde má Brno lepší výchozí pozici naž Ostrava.

The book analyses present development of inner cities in the largest Moravian towns Brno and Ostrava in broader relations. It emerges from the position of both cities in the national settlement system. It deals with theoretical understanding contemporary urban processes in post-socialist cities and argues that the cities of East-Central Europe are more post-industrial from the global viewpoint. Analyses of inner cities state their division to better and worse addresses with more dynamic development in the second of the categories. The book considers the impact of socially preferred (students) and socially excluded (Roma and homeless people) population groups. The book summarizes selective changes in inner cities (change the residential function to offices, gentrification, re-urbanization, ghettoization), suggests possible future trends and discusses future positions of both the cities in the European settlement system where Brno has more hopeful starting point than Ostrava.
