Práce postihuje v co nejúplnějším záběru vývoj institucionálního ukotvování humanitních a sociálních věd v českých zemích od revoluční poloviny 19. století do vzniku Československé akademie věd. Práce členěna do pěti časových oddílů, při jejichž vytčení byl brán zřetel na výrazné proměny institucí existujících a instituce nově ustavované, v nichž byla věda v různé míře pěstována nebo které se o vědu zajímaly. Zohledněn byl rovněž celkový vývoj společnosti a důležité politické události.

This work endeavours to depict the institutional framework for the humanities and social sciences in the Czech lands to the fullest possible extent from the revolutionary mid-19th century to the creation of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. Chronologically, the work is divided up into five time sections, demarcated either by transformations within existing institutions or by the creation of new institutions in which scholarship was fostered to varying degrees or which were at least involved in scholarship. General developments in society and important political events were also taken into account.
