Knihy vzpomínek, mozaiky individuálních lidských osudů, obohacují naše představy o jakékoli historické etapě svou bezprostředností i konkrétními prožitky. Pavel Spunar (* 1928) vyrostl v pražské intelektuální rodině s bohatými kulturními kořeny i zázemím, kde ještě doznívaly tradice měšťanské kultury konce 19. století. Autor přiblížil své dětství i gymnaziální studia za války a vykreslil prostředí pražské Filozofické fakulty Karlovy univerzity v přelomových letech 1947 – 1952. Většinu svých vzpomínek však věnoval svému působení v ústavech Československé a České akademie věd. Píše bez hořkosti a neskrývá ani svá pochybení.

Memoirs, the mosaic of individual human destinies, enrich our ideas about any historical stage of its immediacy and concrete experiences. Pavel Spunar (* 1928) grew up in Prague's intellectual family with rich cultural roots and backgrounds, which have played out the tradition of bourgeois culture of the late 19th century. Author describes his childhood and grammar study, in the war, portraying the environment of the Prague Faculty of Philosophy, Charles University, 1947-1952. Most of his memories is devoted his work in institutions of the Czechoslovak and Czech Academy of Sciences. He writes without bitterness, and even does not hide his misconduct. The book is full of characteristics of teachers, friends and colleagues at home and abroad. Memories shows the author's deep respect for the Academy of Sciences and recall that the young postwar generation was not so dazzled by contemporary communist slogans, as is sometimes mistakenly assumed.
