We studied a silkworm gene, which is specifically expressed in the silk glands of last instar larvae. This gene has 13 exons and produces 2 alternatively spliced mRNAs responsible for the synthesis of two silk fibre sticky coating components. The most similar protein of known sequence is an adhesive protein from marine blue mussel Mytilus edulis that serves for the attachment of the mussel to the rock. The adherence measurement of crude sericin 2 extract revealed that it was lower than the adherence of commercial bone glue but higher than the adherence of the commercial starch glue.
