A total of 457 anonymous diarrhoeal stool samples of 203 immunocompetent patients in the age of 0-69 with suspected cryptosporidiosis were examined for the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts using aniline-carbol-methyl violet staining. Seven microscopically positive samples (3.4%) originating from 6 children and 1 adult were determined using PCR amplifying species-specific DNA sequences of SSU rRNA. The majority represented the C. parvum bovine genotype, which was found in five cases. One was C. hominis and one was found to contain the Cryptosporidium pig genotype II. The host of Cryptosporidium pig genotype II, 29-year-old man was also infected with Giardia intestinalis Assemblage A. This is the first documented case of human infection caused by this Cryptosporidium genotype.
