Based on the examination of the type series of both Apogonia niponica Lewis, 1895 and Apogonia chinensis Moser, 1918, the type locality of the former species is clarified and its geographic distribution is extended by proposing A. chinensis a junior subjective synonym of A. niponica. All previous records of A. niponica from Taiwan should refer to A. rufobrunnea Moser, 1915.
Na základě studia primárních typových sérií druhů Apogonia niponica Lewis, 1895 a A. chinensis Moser, 1918 jsou obě jména synonymizována a je upřesněna typová lokalita A. niponica. Všechny publikované údaje o A. niponica z Tchajwanu se patrně týkají druhu A. rufobrunnea Moser, 1915.
