Hlavním tématem odborné monografie je problém informačního přesycení. Přistupuje k němu prostřednictvím pěti dílčích studií, jež se snaží společný problém lokalizovat v různých historických obdobích a různých materiálních a kulturních prostředích. "Čtení, jež se zapisuje" přináší zkratkovitý přehled materiálních praktik čtení – mechanismů dělání nových textů ze starých. "Album, atlas, archiv" zdůrazňuje nutnost vnímat obrazy v rámci větších celků, sérií a souborů, jež jsou vždy hybridní směsí vizuálních a textuálních konvencí. "Sociologická technoimaginace" se věnuje grafům, schématům a diagramům užívaným v sociálních vědách coby metodám zvládání naakumulovaného množství statistických dat.

The main subject of this scholarly monograph is information overload and the methods of coping with it. They are treated in five individual essays, which localize their common problem within different historical periods and different material and cultural milieus. "Reading, which writes itself" surveys material practices of reading as they were employed in modern sciences; the mechanisms of creating new texts from old ones. "Album, atlas, archive" stresses the need to conceive of images in terms of series and arrangements rather than individually and analyzes the central category of collecting. "Sociological technoimagination" deals with graphs, schemes, and diagrams used in the social sciences and understands them as a kind of artificial organ or prosthesis necessary for survival in the modern world.
