Given the current very stringent competition between steel and concrete, ways are being investigated with the view to make steel more competitive. One of them is to strive to reduce the cost of the fabrication of steel structure. Within the framework of so doing, we should do our best in order to make the fabrication tolerances for the plate elements of steel structures less severe. Bearing this in mind, an extensive analysis of the effect of initial imperfections of the web of steel girders on their ultimate limit state is studied.
