Study of dispersion through 18 different idealised arrays of building-like obstacles with various packing densities, layout arrangements, and building height distribution was conducted to find general rules of vertical mass transfer, which should be applied to real urban environments. Simultaneous measurement of passive tracer concentration and vertical wind component with high temporal resolution was conducted in the wind tunnel. This is a unique experimental method and it allows to directly derive the advective and turbulent vertical transport. The importance of a proper determination of the vertical turbulent fluxes at the edge of the plume and at the roof top level is emphasised.
