Historic mortars from various remnants of structures built in pre-Romanesque and Romanesque period at Prague castle were characterised by means of optical microscopy. The investigated mortars showed differences in their filler composition. The mortar binders also demonstrated richness in variety including: clay and lime-clay binders, various lime based binders, lime binders containing binder related particles, and lime binders with brick dust. Careful selection of aggregate and mortar preparation showed relatively well advanced masonry technology for the early lime and stone buildings in the Czech region.
