NPR Žofínský prales chrání ukázku submontánního přirozeného jedlobukového lesa 5. lesního vegetačního stupně. Jsou zde zastoupeny květnaté a acidofilní bučiny a podmáčené smrčiny. Vzhledem k relativně plochému terénu a nenarušenému vodnímu režimu se v NPR zachovala rozsáhlá prameniště hostící také druhy, jež dnes považujeme za luční. Je možné, že takovéto mokřadní bezlesí se podílelo v lesní fázi holocénu na zachování světlomilných druhů rostlin dnes rostoucích v lučních formacích.

The vegetation of the Žofínský prales virgin forest (South Bohemia), which is one of the oldest nature reserve in Central Europe protected from 1838, was analyzed by the Braun-Blanquet approach. Five forest communities were distinguished. Two vegetation types within the spring vegetation occur there: sciophilous springs of the Caricion remotae alliance and treeless springs. The treeless spring vegetation is composed of the species of sciophilous springs, peaty meadows and wet meadows. Our hypothesis is that some light-demanding species of present grasslands could survive Holocene periods dominated by forests in such treeless spring areas.
