Článek popisuje a hodnotí již více než půl století trvající tradici studia dějin národů a zemí Balkánského poloostrova na Filozofické fakultě Masarykovy univerzity a v Historickém ústavu Akademie věd České republiky v Brně. U zrodu této tradice stál historik Josef Macůrek (1901–1992) a turkolog a bulharista Josef Kabrda (1906–1968). Dodnes se v Brně pořádají mezinárodní vědecké konference věnované specifikům historického a kulturního vývoje Balkánského poloostrova a na Masarykově univerzitě se studuje řada oborů zaměřených na problematiku jihovýchodní Evropy (filologie, historie, etnologie, politologie ad.).

The article describes and assesses the more than half a century of the tradition of studying the history of the races and countries of the Balkan Peninsula at the Masaryk University, Faculty of Arts, and at The Institute of History, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in the town of Brno. The historian Josef Macůrek (1901–1992) and the Turkey and Bulgaria expert Josef Kabrda (1906–1968) were present at the birth of this tradition. International scientific conferences devoted to the specifics of the historic and cultural developments of the Balkan Peninsula continue to take place in Brno. Many subjects focusing on the issues concerning South-eastern Europe are studied at Masaryk University (philology, history, ethnology, politics, etc.).
