Author as historian analyses the impressions of "foreign" and "foreigners" in life-stories especially in regard to the bipolarity of a world structured by the competition between the "capitalist" West and "socialist" East. Using Maurice Halbwach´s concept of "frames of memory", the author focuses his attention both on the properties of these frames and thein most important contoures. He analyse the sources of information through which narrators formed stereotypical images of foreigners and foreign countries without ever having visited the countries in question or having had any personal contact with foreigners. In the second part of the essay, the author contrasts these stereotypes the memories and images of actual foreigners whom narrators met in Czechoslovakia and the image of foreign countries based on narrators´ personal experience of travelling abroad, including emigration.
