Effect of different amounts of precipitation (rainfall reduced by 50%, enhanced by 50% and the full rainfall of the growing season) was studied on belowground plant biomass of mountain, wet highland, and dry lowland grasslands. Rreduced amounts of precipitation significantly affected both yearly root increments and total root dry mass in the highland grassland. Conditions of dry year resulted in considerable reduction of total belowground dry mass in highland and mountain grasslands.
