The ability to import ontologies safely, that is, without changing the original meaning of their terms, has been identified as crucial for collaborative development and reuse of (OWL) ontologies. In the paper, the notion of local safety of an ontology was proposed and scenarios were indentified in which this notion may be useful in guiding the development of an ontology that is to import other ontologies safely.
