The paper on the basis of wide-spectrum literature retrieval and according to own empirical surveys discuss the issue of public perception of wind energy and analyze the factors (geographical, political-institutional, social-psychological, etc.) affecting and shaping public opinion and attitudes, or more precisely the acceptance and/or opposition to local wind power development projects. The analysis comprises general aspects but takes into account and details some specifics from the Czech Republic as well.

Ačkoliv výzkumy veřejného mínění prokazují obecně vysokou míru podpory využívání obnovitelných zdrojů energie včetně větrných elektráren, tato podpora významně klesá ve vztahu ke konkrétním projektům jejich výstavby. Tento fenomén bývá nejčastěji vysvětlován tzv. NIMBY syndromem označujícím skutečnost, že lidé podporují určitou myšlenku v obecné rovině, ale brání se její realizaci v rámci vlastní lokality. Cílem příspěvku je zhodnotit kontextuální, politicko-institucionální, sociální a další faktory stojící v pozadí NIMBY postojů a poukázat na to, že opozice vůči větrným elektrárnám má většinou složitější, multidimenzionální a sociálně konstruovanou podstatu.
