The article deals with various approaches to antiquity in the inter-war art. The surrealists regarded it as a source of extremely disturbing ideas, capturing in a precise way the traumas of modern people. The approach chosen by Toyen gives rise to a number of questions regarding the way in which she adopted examples from the art of antiquity, the selection of mythical female heroines, and the mutual relationship between painting, sculpture and collage.
