Aerobic anoxygenic phototrophs (AAPs) use BChl a to harvest light energy to supplement their predominantly heterotrophic metabolism. Recent reports suggest that they constitute significant fraction of bacterial community in oligotrophic marine environments, but the contribution of AAP photosynthesis to the marine carbon cycle remains matter of dispute. One of unknown variables in quantification of carbon fixation of the AAP community is the physiological range of the ratio of their light-harvesting pigment, bacteriochlorophyll to their reaction centers. This parameter can be determined from Bchl effective cross-section by kinetic fluorometry
