Rys ostrovid je největší českou kočkovitou šelmou. Přirozeně reguluje početnost populací velkých býložravců, kteří v případě neúměrně vysokých stavů negativně ovlivňují stav lesních ekosystémů. Zároveň se však touto aktivitou dostává do konfliktu s hospodářskými zájmy člověka. Negativní postoj veřejnosti k velkým šelmám a s tím související vysoká míra nelegálního lovu jsou i nadále hlavními příčinami ohrožení těchto druhů na našem území.

The Eurasian Lynx (Lynx lynx) is the biggest European wild cat. The Eurasian Lynx's original population was extirpated on what is now the Czech Republic in the second half of the 19th century. Due to migration of individuals from neighbouring countries and their more effective protection, a population of the mammalian predator was recovered there in the 1970s and 1980s. In central Europe, the Eurasian Lynx is an an important driver controlling forest ungulate numbers: therefore, the carnivore substantially contibutes to the forest ecosystem health. Moreover, at the same time, predation pressure by the Eurasian Lynx on forest and domestic animals is the most common reason of its conflict with human activities. The conflict very often results in poaching, which has been the main threat to the Eurasian Lynx in the Czech Republic.
