Tumor-associated protein CA IX has two major forms. One is a cell-associated, transmembrane protein of 54/58 kDa, expressed in gastric mucosa and in several types of cancer. The other is a soluble protein s-CA IX (50/54 kDa) released into body fluids. Conceivably, s-CA IX might serve as a marker antigen for monitoring certain groups of cancer patients after surgery and/or chemotherapy.
