Nuclear magnetic resonance (MR) imaging provides a noninvasive method for studying the fate of transplanted cells in vivo. Our study demonstrates that grafted MSC and ESC migrate into an injured CNS, where only a small portion differentiated to neurons and astrocytes. The contrast agent, based on iron-oxide nanoparticles, can be used as a marker for long-term noninvasive MR tracking of implanted stem cells.
